Potential closure of swimming pools in Campaspe Shire

Media Statement – Potential closure of swimming pools in Campaspe Shire Council

Tuesday 18th January 2022

Kidsafe Victoria have recently become aware of the recommendations made by Council to close 7 swimming pools in the Campaspe Shire.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 5, with recent figures from Life Saving Victoria demonstrating that Victoria experienced its worst childhood drowning toll in over 20 years (during 2020/21). COVID has played a significant role in this, and with swimming lessons more critical than ever, we are aware of the shortage of both teachers and swimming placements for children.

In the last 48 hours we have written to Campaspe Shire Council councillors, CEO, local Member of Parliament and other key stakeholders to understand the potential implications of this recommendation for child safety and to request a delay in the decision until there have been further discussions with key stakeholders.

We look forward to engaging in discussions with key stakeholders and the local community impacted to work together and ensure the best outcome for child safety.
