National Farm Safety Week – Keeping Kids Safe on Farms

farm safetyFarms are exciting places for children to live, grow and explore, however they can also provide unique environments and injury hazards. Farms typically combine the family home and an industrial workplace, which means children are exposed to a wide range of hazards that aren’t present in urban home environments.

A recent report from the Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit revealed that child (0-14 years) injury related death rates in outer regional areas of Victoria are four times that of rates for children in major cities. The report also reveals that injury related ambulance attendance, emergency department presentation and hospital admission rates are all higher for children in inner and outer regional areas.

National Farm Safety Week was held from 21st – 26th July to raise awareness of farm safety issues across Australia. As part of the week, Kidsafe Victoria ran a number of media and social media activities to promote farm safety messages, including a blog with the story of how an innocent looking lentil crop landed five year old Denzel in hospital for three days. Snow Safety

snow safetyAre you planning a trip to the snow with the kids before the end of winter? Snow sports are great fun, however there is a risk of injury, particularly for children who may be inexperienced.

Skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing are the most common snow sports where children are injured – the majority of injuries occur from falls and collisions with objects or other people.

The good news is there are some simple tips that you can follow to prevent snow sport injuries and help to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe time on the slopes:

  • Always supervise children closely
  • Ensure your child is wearing appropriate and correctly fitted safety gear.
  • Enrol your child in a class led by a qualified instructor so they can learn the basics.
  • Match your child’s level of experience to the activity; separate beginners from the more experienced. Do not progress your child to a more difficult run until they have developed the necessary skills and confidence.
  • Always check for environmental hazards with resort operators and remain aware of weather conditions.
