ISOFIX compatible child restraints were first introduced in Australia as part of the 2013 Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1754:2013), providing another option for how child restraints can be fitted to a vehicle. Instead of using the vehicle seatbelt, ISOFIX compatible child restraints connect to a vehicles lower ISOFIX anchor points by using the restraints rigid or flexible connectors.

Like traditional child restraints, ISOFIX compatible child restraints come with a top tether strap which is required to be connected to the vehicles anchor point at all times. ISOFIX compatible child restraints are also required to meet the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1754) to be able to be sold and used in Australia.

Not all cars in Australia come with ISOFIX anchor points. In newer vehicles, ISOFIX low anchorages should either be visible or their location clearly marked with the ISOFIX symbol. If you are unsure you can check your vehicle’s manual or contact the manufacturer.

Research – Analysing the use of ISOFIX compatible child restraints in Victoria

Kidsafe Victoria, with the support of the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Community Road Safety Grants Program, undertook a research project into the use of ISOFIX compatible child restraints in order to determine parental attitudes towards the system, the use of the system (including any barriers to use) and to identify any common misuse/incorrect installation issues that have been observed since the systems release onto the Australian market.
