Closing the Gate on Backyard Pool Drowning Campaign

550Matt chn

Did you know that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian children under 5 years of age?

Backyard swimming pools are the most common location where toddler drowning incidents occur. Figures from the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report show that in 2014/15, over half of all toddler drowning incidents in Australia occurred in a backyard pool.

On Monday 28th September, former Olympian and father of three Matt Welsh launched Kidsafe’s ‘Closing the Gate on Backyard Pool Drowning’ campaign, calling on all pool and spa owners across the country to check the safety of their barriers in the lead up to the warmer months.

The campaign involves a number of stakeholders including Life Saving Victoria, Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Victorian Building Authority, Ambulance Victoria, SPASA VIC, Australian Institute of Building Surveyors, Department of Justice and Regulation and the Victorian Municipal Building Surveyors Group.

As part of the campaign, a range of information and resources have been made available to pool and spa owners via www.kidsafevic.com.au/water-safety/pool-fence-safety, including:

  • Life Saving Victoria’s Home Pool Safety Self-Assessment tool and
  • An information kit for estate agents, landlords and property managers
  • Information on  pool fencing legislation in Victoria
  • Information on the importance of first aid and CPR

A big thank you to ARC fences who kindly provided the pool gate which was used as a prop at the launch
