Urgent action needed to prevent e-scooter and e-bike injuries in children

Emergency department presentations linked to e-scooters have surged by over 1500% in five years, while e-bike injuries have risen by more than 900%.*

This National Kidsafe Day (5 March), we are shining a spotlight on the rapidly growing risks associated with e-scooters and e-bikes – and the urgent need for action to prevent serious injuries.

E-scooters and e-bikes may be increasingly popular, but they are not toys. They are high-speed motorised devices capable of causing life-altering injuries and fatalities when used unsafely.

Recent Victorian data shows a dramatic increase in injuries among children and teenagers, particularly those aged 10–18 years.

Kidsafe Victoria is raising awareness of these risks, advocating for stronger safety measures, and providing practical guidance to parents, carers, schools, community groups and government.

What you need to know

  • It is illegal for children under 16 to ride an e-scooter in Victoria.
  • Serious injuries can and do occur – including brain injuries, broken bones, facial trauma and other long-term harm.
  • Helmets must be worn and should fit correctly. Protective gear significantly reduces injury risk.
  • Never remove or tamper with speed limiters, or modify an e-bike or e-scooter.
  • E-scooters and e-bikes contain lithium-ion batteries. If damaged, faulty or charged incorrectly, these batteries can pose a serious fire risk in and around the home.
  • Only allow use in legal areas and within the device’s speed limits.
  • Be aware of the gap between how these products are marketed and how they can legally be used.
  • “Kid-friendly” branding does not mean a device is suitable for children – these are motorised vehicles, not toys.

How you can help

  • Understand the risks and share accurate safety information with other families.
  • Encourage safe, legal use in your community.
  • Support stronger safety standards and responsible retail practices.
