To highlight the importance of keeping children safe around public transport Kidsafe has forged a partnership with Metlink, to raise awareness among parents and carers.

The awareness raising campaign is called Travelling with Children and is being launched today, during Children’s Week and October Safety Month.

Michelle Herbert, senior manager at Metlink, says we want to remind carers how important it is to follow the basic rules to avoid an incident.

“Melbourne has an extensive public transport network and a fantastic record of child safety – we want to make sure that continues,” says Ms Herbert.

â€śMuch of it is common sense but as we move into the busy festive season, mums and carers need to make sure they are doing everything they can to avoid an incident.”

Kidsafe’s Vice President, Robert Caulfield, said that public transport was a safe and easy way of getting around Melbourne.

“We certainly don’t want to discourage people with children from using public transport: for the most part, it’s one of the safest ways you can get around and children love the experience,” says Mr Caulfield.

“However, Kidsafe does encourage parents to always hold onto their pram and put the brake on when waiting, buckle up their children and stand-back a safe distance when their train, tram or bus is approaching.”

In the last year, there have been a number of reported incidents on Melbourne’s public transport network involving prams and young children.

Metlink is working with the operators on pram safety and this campaign is a timely reminder to all people travelling with children to take care.

Local North Melbourne mother, Kate Kennedy regularly takes her daughter, Elke, on Melbourne’s public transport network because it is such an easy way of getting around.

“Public transport has so many benefits for mothers – it’s cost effective, relaxed and good for the environment,” says Ms Kennedy.

“I have never had an incident or seen one but it’s good to keep your guard up, particularly with distractions like mobile phones,” she says.
